Language Arts Studies
I work to make study time at home less stressful for families by giving the Spelling/Vocabulary and Timed Reading Practice in the Take Home Folder. Parents can help children study for the Vocabulary Test and Spelling Test given at the end of the week. We practice in class to give enough training on how to be successful.
Each school night should include 20 minutes of reading practice from a book of your student's choice. On Monday we have school library time to rotate books when they are finished. Children are encouraged to find books challenging enough to use at home. A monthly reading calendar is sent home to track the number of days read and is turned in at the end of the month. One way to help your child improve their comprehension is to spend one night a week sitting with them as they read aloud and after a few pages have them explain what they read. Please encourage your child to read a variety of books. Our librarian recommends family visits to your local library where librarians can suggest good books on your student's level.
Math Studies
Chromebooks and text books are used in class for Math Studies. Take opportunities to make math an everyday experience in the home and on the go, especially with counting and subtracting. Count out change with them, ask them what time it is, measure their height and include them in measurements around the house.
In the bottom of your child's backpack our class has provided addition and subtraction flashcards to review. These are fun to sort out in the provided bags of the ones they know and don't know. As time goes on, math scores will show an improvement in both speed and accuracy.
PE
We will have PE weekly. Please have your child wear closed-toe running shoes. With sudden weather changes, children should have a waterproof jacket with a hood in their backpack each day if possible.
Social Studies with Show and Tell
We make show and tell a part of studying people and places on the last full day of school each week. When students bring an item make sure a location can be pointed out on a map at school, such as:
- Where it was purchased
- Where it was made before it was sent to another place to sell
We play a game with Who, What, When, Where, and Why as we present it.
Birthdays
To celebrate a birthday, we have the classmates sign a card. If the birthday student wants to bring treats for the class, they must be individually wrapped and made in a commercial kitchen to follow County Health Ordinances. The students are not allowed to eat in the classroom, but can take the birthday treats home.
